Hosted by Scrap Weapons, this webinar will summarise the scientific evidence of nuclear winter with renowned climate scientist and member of the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs, Prof. Arthur Petersen, and, together with Prof. Daniel Plesch, examine the extent to which nuclear war planning among nuclear-armed states accounts for these risks. Discussions will address whether nuclear warfare exercises and decision-making scenarios, which often assume limited nuclear use, adequately consider the resulting starvation risks. How far is nuclear winter acknowledged in deterrence studies? Are agriculture ministries engaged in the national leadership on the issue? Do non-nuclear states in the global south recognise the existential threat that nuclear use poses to them?
